The Dose

The future of music is bigger than music.

Every week, we explore what's happening in music and culture… and what's next.

Jalen Brunson might be the most important second-round pick of the last decade.

The Knicks just won their first championship in over 50 years.

You've probably seen the celebration and highlights.

What you may not have seen is where it started.

Jalen Brunson was the 33rd pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Thirty-two players were selected before him.

Today, he's an NBA champion, Finals MVP, and the face of one of the biggest sports brands in the world.

Culture loves overnight success stories.

Reality usually looks more like Brunson.

Passed over and undervalued.

But he built a legacy anyway.

Talent gets noticed eventually, but only if it survives long enough.

Juneteenth Mixtapes Worth Your Time

Juneteenth has quietly become one of the most important release weekends of the year.

Driven by the artists, not the labels.

This year, a few projects stood out.

1. DM Carter – M8 Hungers 2

DM Carter is a Detroit-based Christian rapper affiliated with Team Most High.

M8H2 is a spiritual rap tape that feels more focused than most projects coming out of the underground right now.

Strong writing, smooth flows, some Jesus, and a reminder that some of the most interesting music is still happening outside the major label ecosystem.

Features a diverse mix of artists including Friz, monikker, and Courtney Nord.

2. Tierra Whack – Whack’s Museum

Also released on Juneteenth, Whack's Museum is proof that originality still matters.

Seen as her “return to rap” after an experimentation phase, Tierra Whack drops raw lyrical flows over ominous beats.

One thing’s clear. She’s not writing for the algorithm or anyone else’s playbook. Tierra Whack continues to do what she's always done: build her own world.

It just goes to show that the best artists don't just make songs.

They make their own category.

If there's one thing Juneteenth consistently delivers, it's artists willing to take creative risks.

Check out these fresh tapes and send us any exclusive releases you found this year.

That's your dose for this weekend.

See you Wednesday.
